New Chair's Message
I welcome the opportunity to be the new Grand Valley Chapter Chair, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the entire executive for their support over the last couple years.
The Grand Valley Chapter is one of the largest chapters within OACETT and I plan on continuing the success of this chapter as I step into the role of Chair. We intend on continuing the many popular and successful events that we have had in the past. This year we will be having our annual golf tournament, continuing family events such as hockey nights, our adopt-a-road campaign, renewable energy presentation and others. We will also continue to focus on the speaker’s nights and hope to plan some plant tours for the near future along with continuing to grow our relationship with Conestoga College.
As a volunteer organization we depend on your support and participation. I invite every member to consider how they might contribute to OACETT, with ideas of what we can do for you, your fellow members and the community.
Please continue to visit the chapter website and participate in events, and when you can, let us know what works well, and what changes you would recommend in order for us to continue to build a strong chapter.
Thank you,
Kevin Lima, C.E.T.

Energy Presentation @ Pope John Paul II
On April 19th, 2011 local chapter representatives took part in an energy presentation at Pope John Paul II in Kitchener. The grades presented to were 5 & 6. Two sessions were had that day. One in the morning and one in the afternoon. The session consisted of a PowerPoint presentation where we talked about energy as a whole and how we generated and consumed it. The kids were very keen and showed lots of interest. They also had some very good questions. Afterwards we took some time and had the kids put together a solar car. Thankfully, we were blessed with some sun for the morning session and the cars performed as they should. The afternoon we were not so lucky. We also had the stationary bike hooked-up to a generator and the kids took turns pedalling so they fully understood how much energy was required to run an incandescent light bulb, but also a fluorescent and finally an LED bulb. Thanks to Dave from Northern lights who was kind enough to show off their portable solar trailer for the kids. The teachers asked if they could keep the cars for future sunny days which of course we obliged.
Thanks to PJPII for giving us the opportunity to speak to the kids and to the OACETT members who donated their time for the kids.
John Alton Memorial Hockey tournament
For the 3rd year, the Grand Valley Chapter entered a hockey team into the John Alton Memorial Hockey tournament in St. Catharine’s on January 22/23 hosted by the Niagara Region chapter. Once again the Niagara Region Chapter did a great job with organizing and running this tournament. Outfitted with new team jerseys, the GVC team came out flying and won the tournament with an undefeated record. This year’s team effort was enhanced by the nicknames provided to all of the GVC players by Paul “Moose” Moossdorff! Special thanks to Mike Laurie A.Sc.T.for organizing the GVC team.

The Chapter has adopted a section of County Road 124 between Guelph and Cambridge. Even thought it was a cool, day over 20 chapter members and friends helped clean up our section of County Road 124 on October 23, 2010. Be sure to check the GVC website for future clean up dates this year.
The OACETT Grand Valley Chapter presented " Gear School" at the Schwaben Club on Thursday December 2, 2010. Gear School was a 1 hour presentation on the design, manufacturing, failure analysis and the many applications of gears from Food Processing to Mining to Hydropower. Our speaker for the evening was Clay Williams, C.E.T. Clay has been involved with mechanical power transmission equipment for 25 years, as technical support, sales and as a mechanical designer. Clay has been with his current employer, Moventas for 15 years and has moved with the company to Germany, back to Canada, to the United States, and then back to Canada again. He has worked in several different capacities but is currently the Service Manager, where he inspects damaged gear units, and performs failure analysis of the components and assemblies. Special thanks to Kevin Lima CET for arranging this event.
The chapter executive holiday party was held at the Heuther Hotel on Waterloo on November 26, 2010. The small but mighty group enjoyed a great meal and had a wonderful time kicking off the Christmas party season. Thanks to Julia Evers A.Sc.T. for arranging this event.
