Speaker's Corner Presentation

The speakers corner event that was held at the Transylvania Club in Kitchener on Thursday night April 26th, was one of the most successful speaking events in recent GVC history. We had a total of 63 people in attendance. Both dinner entrees were fantastic, and lots of positive comments were given to the chef that evening

The two presenters were Craig Waller and Jennifer Young, both from the City of Kitchener. Their presentation was based on a general overview of the recent changes and the new format to the new Ontario Building Code. We mainly discussed the changes to Part 3 - Industrial and Commercial buildings. We also discussed a brand new section called Resource Conservation - Part 12. This section sets the minimum energy efficiency standards for the design and construction of new buildings and additions. The new energy efficiency requirements will come into force in three separate stages, with the last stage being in 2011.

We have set a tentative date for another speakers event a year from now called "Working with the new Ontario Building Code", with the thought being, the industry will have had a year to work with the code in real life situations. We look forward to an even larger participation in that speakers corner event.

Please keep in touch and keep checking the GVC web site for future events and tours.

Thanks to all that made this event a success.

Mannheim Water Treatment Plant Tour.

The tour took place on Thursday March 16, 2006 @ 7:00pm

The Region of Waterloo supplies water to approximately 425,000 people living in Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, Elmira, St. Jacobs, Baden and New Hamburg through an Integrated Urban System - a complex network of wells, reservoirs, pumping stations and trunk watermains. The Region supplies on average of 171.5 million litres per day. The Region's water supply comes from two sources: approximately 75% is groundwater and 25% is surface water from the Grand River.
The Mannheim Water Treatment Plant is located on Ottawa Street in Kitchener and receives surface water which is pumped from the Grand River to the Mannheim Water Treatment Plant where it is purified, disinfected and blended with groundwater before sending it to the municipalities, for their distribution to residents of the Region.
The Mannheim Water Treatment Plant is also the base for the Aquifer Storage and Recovery system, the first of it's kind in Canada.

Speaker Event

This year's Speakers Corner started off on Thursday January 19th with David Timlock providing a discussion on LEED building. David Timlock, P.Eng is the President of the Grand Valley Construction Association and Owner of Collaborative Structures Ltd. in Cambridge.

"The LEED™ (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) green building rating system was originally developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) to provide a recognized standard for the construction industry to assess the environmental sustainability of building designs. Canadian Green Building Council (CaGBC) has since adapted the USGBC LEED™ rating system to the specific concerns and requirements of buildings in Canada.
The LEED Canada-NC 1.0 Rating System recognizes leading edge buildings that incorporate design, construction and operational practices that combine healthy, high-quality and high-performance advantages with reduced environmental impacts. They provide a voluntary, consensus-based, market-responsive set of criteria that evaluate project performance from a whole-building, whole-life perspective, providing a common understanding for what constitutes a green building in the Canadian context. This is done by awarding points earned by meeting specific performance criteria, defined in Prerequisites and Credits, that outperform typical standard practice.  Improved building performance is certified with ratings - Certified, Silver, Gold or Platinum - based on the total number of points earned by a project."
